Part of email by Richard Crook, architect - who lives in a house just in front of the site of St. Peter's and has been a lifelong campaigner to preserve the architectural heritage of Eastbourne.

...... I went to St Peter's many times and sang there with Eastbourne College Choir but I don't remember it specifically.

I don't think the Lyall Memorial window would have been part of the east window, as this would have been put in all at once and the shape of the five lancets of the east window shown in the view down the nave in the guide (more a farewell brochure!) shows a different shape to the glass photo in Florida.

The guide states that the Hope window was installed in 1906 in her memory with the Faith window installed the same year and that the Charity window was never completed. Unfortunately the guide doesn't say where.

The Lady Chapel east windows shown in the guide appear to be five in number and therefore an unlikely location.

I suspect the windows were on the south side of the church ( to get the sunlight playing on the glass) and her window might have been the second in with the third plain glass ready to receive Charity - never done.

Dear Willem,

I have found your website, and it has solved a mystery for me; the whereabouts of Ada's stained glass window.

I live between Ada's Eastbourne home from 1884 onward (now 16 College Road), and site of St. Peter's Church (visible from my back garden), where there now stands a large retirement block, with St Saviour's Church being a short distance in the other direction.

St. Peter's Church was linked to St. Saviour's Church, the church of Rev Jameson, brother-in-law of Ada, with whom she lived, and this Church still stands (now St. Saviour's and St. Peter's), and I attend this church. In this church are three bells donated by Ada, named after characters in her books.

Ada was exceptional in many ways and her legacy will be important in Eastbourne in the future.

I would love to share more information with you.

You have done something amazing in saving her window, which may well have been lost forever. Thank you for sharing a photo of it on the internet, that others may find and observe.

In 2012 a small Kempe church window was sold at Christies in London for $7,000.
It was in 6 segments and unframed. The combined size was 14 x 31 inches, which is less than a quarter of the size of your main window.

Mesmerising story. What a great find. Consider donating the windows back to Eastbourne.
The Latin text on the scroll is from Psalm 71 verse 1. The King James version reads: "In Thee, O Lord, doe I put my trust, let me neuer be put to confusion".
P.S. At that time the "v" was written as a "u".

Thank you for the information about the 2 windows from St Peter Eastbourne.
The Kempe Society (which no longer exists) produced in 2000 'The Corpus of Kempe Stained Glass in the UK and Ireland' For St Peter Eastbourne (which was demolished) they record 3 windows 'whereabouts unknown' - these are 3 light Christ as the True Vine, 1 light St Michael and 3 light Worship of Kings.

Nu ik dit weer heb mogen aanschouwen moet ik je met veel meer ontzag benaderen, want je bent voor mij een top artist. Jammer dat je een sluimerend artist bent want met zo'n gave zou je er een breder publiek mee kunnen plezieren. Ik ben in ieder geval blij je te kennen en wens je nog heel veel succes. Ga zo door.
